Undergraduate Catalog 2012-2013: Lincoln College

Mathematics

MAT 090: Pre-Algebra

Credits: 3
This covers pre-algebra topics, such as order of operations, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportions, percents, basic equation solving, and basic geometry with an emphasis on applications. Scientific calculator required.

MAT 092: Beginning Algebra

Credits: 3
This is a first course in Algebra, covering the properties of real numbers, equations and inequalities in one variable, polynomials, exponents, factoring, and geometry with emphasis on applications. Point plotting and rational expressions may also be included.  Scientific calculator required.
Prereq. C or better in MAT 090 or placement exam

MAT 101: Intermediate Algebra

Credits: 4
The student who has had some algebra is offered the opportunity to review and extend knowledge of the algebraic structure of the real numbers.  This course begins with elementary algebra and carries through quadratic equations, systems of equations, and inequalities both linear and quadratic, complex numbers and exponents.  Scientific calculator required.
Prereq. C or better in MAT or 092 or placement exam

MAT 104: College Algebra (G7)

Credits: 4
This course is designed for the student who needs an advanced math course to serve as a prerequisite for (a) a finite math course, (b) a business calculus course or standard calculus course, or (c) to satisfy a liberal arts requirement. Topics include the algebra of functions (polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic), graphing, conic sections, solving equations, including systems. Graphing calculator required.
Prereq. C or better MAT 101 or placement exam

MAT 105: General Education Math (G7)

Credits: 3
This course focuses on mathematical reasoning and the solving of real-life problems, rather than on routine skills and appreciation. A maximum of four of the following topics studied in depth: geometry, counting techniques and probability, graph theory, logic, game theory, linear programming, and statistics. The use of calculators and computers is strong encouraged.  Scientific calculator required.
Prereq. MAT 101
IAI – Ml.904

MAT 110: Elementary Statistics (G7)

Credits: 3
This is an introductory course in elementary statistics designed for the liberal arts student. Topics covered include distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation, and regression.  Scientific calculator required.
Prereq. MAT 101 or placement exam
IAI – MI.902

MAT 130: Calculus and Analytic Geometry I (G7)

Credits: 4
This is a first course in a three-course sequence that includes material from analytic geometry, differential calculus, and integral calculus. Topics covered include introduction to analytic geometry, functions, limits, differentiation, and integration. Graphing calculator required.
Prereq. C or better in MAT 125 or placement exam
IAI – Ml.900-1

MAT 131: Applied Calculus (G7)

Credits: 4
This course is designed specifically for students in business and social science. Topics covered include algebra review, nonlinear functions, differentiation, anti-differentiation, definite integral and multivariate calculus. Graphing calculator required.
Prereq. C or better in MAT 104 or placement exam
