Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. These rights include:


Lincoln College accords all the rights under the Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), the Buckley Amendment, to all students. No one outside the institution shall have access to nor will the institution disclose any information form the student’s education records (except directory information) without the written consent of the student. The Act permits the following exceptions:


  • School officials with legitimate educational interest;
  • Other schools to which a student is transferring;
  • Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;
  • Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student’
  • Organizations conducing certain studies for or on behalf of the school;
  • Accrediting organizations;
  • Compliance with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;
  • Parents of dependent students according to the IRS definition;
  • Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and
  • State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific state law.


Students have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the College to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA is:

Directory Information

Certain personally identifiable information from a student’s education record, designated by Lincoln College as Directory Information, may be released without the student’s prior consent. Directory information includes:


  • Name
  • E-mail addresses
  • Photograph
  • Dates of Attendance at the College
  • Enrollment status (Part-Time, defined as registration for less than 12 credit hours, or Full-Time, defined as registration for 12 credit hours or more)
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Address and phone number
  • Weight and height of athletic team members
  • Date and place of birth
  • Honors and Awards
  • Degree Programs
  • Degrees Earned


Students do have the right to prevent disclosure of Directory Information. Preventing disclosure of Directory Information means that the student essentially remains anonymous as a student. Please consider very carefully the consequences of a decision to withhold directory information. A non-disclosure request will block Lincoln College from releasing any “directory information;” thus, any future requests for such information from non-institutional persons or organizations will be refused.


Any student wishing to prevent disclosure of Directory Information must complete a Request to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information form, available in the Office of the Registrar.
