Alumni Achievement Award – Marc Kalman, Class of 1964

Marc Kalman, class of 1964, came to Lincoln College because of his interest in Abraham Lincoln. While he was a student, he was editor of The Lincolnian, worked on a weekly radio program that was broadcast on a local station, and was voted vice president of the sophomore class. He developed a love for media and broadcasting and decided to make it his life’s work. He transferred to Brown College in Minnesota and graduated in 1967. He started his radio career as a DJ at a small station in Michigan, then moved on to WMBD in Peoria, Illinois, before making his way back to Minnesota. He worked his way up from program director to sales, management, and executive positions with stations in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market. Kalman used his career in broadcasting as a platform from which he helped raise millions of dollars for children’s charities in the Twin Cities, notably the Variety Children’s Hospital and KDWB Family Home. Known for his good management style and station ratings successes, Kalman’s stations won seven National Association of Broadcasting Marconi Awards, including three consecutive awards in the Top 40 category for KDWB, and four National Association of Broadcasting Crystal Awards for community service, including three consecutive awards for KDWB. Under his leadership, KDWB also received the 2003 National Association of Broadcasting Education Foundation’s Service to America Award. Kalman was inducted into the Pavek Museum’s Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2002. He retired from broadcasting in 2011.
