The Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) honored the nation’s top students, faculty, and college radio and television stations on Saturday, March 5th, as part of its 82nd annual conference, held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Charles “Bud” Broyles, Lincoln College Director of LCTV, was named Best Faculty Advisor for College Television, as part of IBS’s Len Mallioux Management Awards. Broyles prevailed over fellow nominees from Goshen College, University of Santo Tomas, and Laselle University.
Broyles joined Lincoln College in 2018, following a distinguished career in television production. Broyles’ was the long-time owner/operator of BVP Productions in Peoria, which produced commercials and corporate productions for clients including Caterpillar and Methodist Medical Center. Broyles also performed national live production assignments for ESPN, FOX Television, and ABC News, among others. In 2013, Broyles was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and his rapidly-worsening condition led to an early retirement.
“When I needed an experienced hand to take over day-to-day operations of LCTV, I knew just the individual,” said Dr. John Malone, Lincoln College Division Chair for Fine Arts and Communication. “The mind was there. The question was whether or not he was physically capable. I reached out to Bud, set up a lunch, and discovered that a new treatment regimen had substantially improved his condition. And the rest, as they say, is history. Bud brought to LCTV a professional ‘network mentality’ in his approach to college television.”
LCTV was also nominated for the first time as Best College/University Television Station. That award was presented to Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. “Being in play for a national best station award with such formidable competition demonstrates the impact Bud, alongside our terrific students, has had on the program,” Malone said.
“Since first meeting Bud when he arrived in 2018, it quickly became apparent he has a very positive story that resonates with the Radio, Television, and New Media students,” said Dr. David Gerlach, President of Lincoln College. “The students respect him, and he proves every day that anyone can overcome significant obstacles with grit and determination. To be recognized with a national honor during his ‘second act’ is very inspirational for the College community.”
Lincoln College was nominated in seven additional categories in this year’s award competition. Spencer Davis, a sophomore from Emden, IL, took top honors in the category for Best Press Release.
